In an unexpected development that not even Hollywood could have predicted, former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has reportedly stated that, should things in the US continue to be disrespectful, he will seriously consider leaving for Russia.
You read correctly—Russia.
In a long and often perplexing interview, Kaepernick expressed his dissatisfaction with the condition of America to a fringe podcast (because where else would this story come from?). He claimed that the disrespect he has experienced since he began to kneel during the playing of the national anthem in 2016 had reached an all-time high. He’s leaving this place, in his opinion, unless things start to improve, and Moscow is the next destination.
“I’ve Done Everything, But America Isn’t Getting It.”
Kaepernick has been a divisive character in and out of the football community for a long time. After what started out as a nonviolent demonstration against racial injustice and police brutality, it swiftly grew into a national scandal that resulted in Kaepernick’s expulsion from the NFL. In spite of this, the former 49ers quarterback never wavered in his dedication to his cause, rising to prominence as a social justice advocate and spearheading multiple campaigns to increase public awareness of problems impacting underrepresented groups.
However, it doesn’t seem to be enough.
In his podcast interview, Kaepernick declared, “I’ve tried everything,” giving off the impression of someone who was ready to quit their day job and relocate to Bali to open a meditation retreat. “I donated, I worked with organizations, and I knelt down.” Ultimately, though, it seems like the nation isn’t paying attention. And perhaps Russia will respect me for my efforts if America doesn’t.
Yes, as Russia is a nation renowned for having a great deal of respect for athletes who speak up and for those who fight for social justice.
In response to the question of why he would pick Russia above other countries, Kaepernick gave an enigmatic and thought-provoking statement. He paused dramatically, as if he could hear the collective perplexity over the airways, and then, “Look, I know what you’re thinking.” But allow me to explain. This is the strength of Russia. This resilience. They don’t act as though they are concerned about something they aren’t. It is unadulterated. Simple.
Kaepernick continued by explaining that, in his opinion, America has grown “too soft,” with its never-ending political discussions and “performative wokeness” failing to bring about substantive change. “In Russia, you are aware of your position. I honor that.
It’s doubtful whether Kaepernick has truly studied Russia’s present political environment, where criticism isn’t exactly met with job offers or endorsement deals. Still, the quarterback came off as confident that he could get the respect he wants in a nation where players who picket are more likely to face far more serious and long-lasting consequences than anything Roger Goodell could conjure up.
Unsurprisingly, Kaepernick’s most recent announcement caused quite a stir on the internet. #KapGoesRussian became popular on Twitter a few minutes after the podcast aired, eliciting a range of reactions from laughter to incredulity. The irony of Kaepernick asking for respect in a nation where the government has not always been known for accepting dissent was too much for some people to ignore.
“Hold on… Is Kaepernick expecting more respect from Russia? Is this the same Russia that forbids free speech? “It’s time for me to take a nap,” tweeted @NotAClue69, aptly expressing the general state of uncertainty.
Some users adopted a funnier tack. “When will ‘From Kneeling to Moscow: The Colin Kaepernick Story’ documentary be available on Netflix this fall?” inquired @FreedomFryFan. “Can we start a GoFundMe to buy him a one-way ticket?” remarked @RealPatriot1776.
Memes abounded. The internet was rapidly overrun with Photoshopped pictures of Kaepernick riding a bear with Vladimir Putin, throwing a football in Red Square, and wearing a fuzzy Russian ushanka hat.
Some, however, saw this as just another development in the ongoing story of Colin Kaepernick vs. the World, despite the laughs. The former quarterback’s backers justified his annoyance by claiming that, despite the severe nature of his argument, it brought attention to a larger problem with how Americans handle those who disagree with the current quo.
He’s obviously not serious about Russia, as @JusticeForAll tweeted. However, his argument is still valid: he is angry that America hasn’t treated him with the decency he deserves. Is it fair to blame him?
Following his revelation that he would consider moving to Russia, Colin Kaepernick has left both admirers and opponents wondering what his next step will be in the grand tradition of celebrities making declarations that may or may not be real. Is this only an attempt to draw attention to his continuous struggle for respect in the United States, or will he really take off for Moscow?
Time will tell. However, one thing is certain: Colin Kaepernick has a knack for keeping people talking. He’s not leaving quietly, whether he’s kneeling on a football pitch or thinking about his life in Russia.
And let’s hope he brings a warm coat if he does wind up in Russia.
